The meeting and event space at the Drury Plaza Hotel Pittsburgh Downtown is right on the money. Two of the property’s function rooms are a creative repurposing of vaults that once held coins, bills, bonds and other securities notes during the building’s former life as Pittsburgh’s Federal Reserve Bank until 2012. The Drury opened in December 2016 after a historic renovation, housing 207 guest rooms and four meeting rooms totaling more than 4,500 square feet including the two vault rooms, which can each host as many as 130 people.

Hefty steel doors fitted with an intricate locking system are still in place as the entryway to the Coin Vault and Main Vault function rooms, and a showcase window displays a cross section of the vault walls. “They’re 3 feet thick, and reinforced with bent iron and concrete,” says Kristen Oakes, the hotel’s area sales manager. The prefunction space outside of the rooms also features the security portal where bank employees would be screened before accessing the vault level. Several other remnants of the bank’s former operations were also maintained for character, including a guard booth that was converted into a valet station.

The hotel is Drury Hotels’ first property in Pennsylvania. The Missouri-based brand was awarded “Highest in Guest Satisfaction Among Upper Midscale Hotel Chains” in the J.D. Power 2017 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Index Study. 

Held Oct. 13, 2017, at the Museum of the American Revolution, Taste America was a four-course plated dinner held to benefit the James Beard Foundation. The event, planned by Cashman & Associates, welcomed 300 attendees who dined on food provided by Brûlée Catering in collaboration with other culinary stars.
