The Discover Lehigh Valley board of directors voted to appoint Alex Michaels as its next president. Michaels, a former Lehigh Valley resident and 1987 Whitehall High School graduate, will bring more than 25 years of executive sales and management experience within the hospitality and tourism, and sports council industries to his position. In March, Discover Lehigh Valley’s current and long-time president, Michael Stershic, announced he would retire at the end of 2018.
Discover Lehigh Valley, the destination marketing organization that promotes tourism in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh and Northampton counties, announced President Michael Stershic will retire at the end of 2018.
“I’ve been fortunate to live and work in Lehigh Valley for more than 35 years, and it’s been a true honor to serve in this role for 14 of those years,” said Stershic.
Thomas J.W. Voss has just been appointed managing director of the 1,048-room-Fairmont Austin, opening the summer of next year. He will be responsible for overall operations, performance and strategic direction for the newest and largest Fairmont hotel in the U.S.
With more than 35 years of experience in the hospitality industry, Voss has held a number of positions, including executive roles with Starwood Hotels.
One day, a customer walked into Rosa’s Fresh Pizza in Philadelphia and asked to pre-purchase a slice of pizza for a homeless person who didn’t have $1.
Now, all customers have the option to buy a $1 slice for themselves and pay another $1 to underwrite the cost of a slice for someone in need.
“[The donation process] has grown very organically from there,” says Mason Warman founder and owner of the restaurant.
It was announced in late February that during the month of March uber-restaurateur Stephen Starr would be introducing a unique "Support our Schools" program in his 20 Philadelphia restaurants.
Philadelphia schools have long been a subject of discontent and Starr’s plans to raise $100,000 during the one-month period would help support multimedia labs, elementary school playgrounds and six-week summer internships. Starr’s restaurants average 40,000 customers per week and diners would be encouraged to add a donation when paying their bill.
